LATEST NEWSSoror Gwendolyn Saffo – 2010 Ida B. Wells Award RecipientFebruary 25th, 2010
The members of the Gainesville Alumnae Chapter would like to congratulate our very own, Madam President Gwendolyn Saffo, for being selected as the recipient of the 2010 Ida B. Wells Award for her contribution to the community. This recognition is extended to women who, in working for women’s and/or civil rights, have also benefited the community, but whose efforts have not yet received recognition. The award is named in honor of the distinguished journalist, fearless reporter and wife of one of Americas earliest black publishers. Ida B. Wells was “editor and proprietor” of the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight. She also worked for suffrage and helped to found the first black suffrage organization. Despite segregation, Wells argued that black and white women should work together to achieve equality. Soror Saffo, we are all so very proud of you! Soror Vivian FilerFebruary 9th, 2010
